WHEREAS, Dr. Terrilyn Rivers-Cannon is a professional School Social Worker dedicated to enhancing the well-being and advocating for the basic needs of all people, especially the most vulnerable in our society; and
WHEREAS, she is this year’s National School Social Worker of the Year honoree who is the first African American, Georgian, and female recipient of this prestigious award. Dr. Terriyln Rivers-Cannon is being recognized for her extraordinary contributions to our society on a national level as a professional who embraces empowerment, inspiration and encouragement; and
WHEREAS, this phenomenal woman works tirelessly to improve children’s prospective for a better future by providing protection from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and mental health issues. She has expanded foster care in areas where it is most needed and has assisted parents in providing financial and emotional support for their children; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Terriyln Rivers-Cannon is dedicated to Georgia and our nation. She aids seniors and adults with disabilities, allowing them to live safer, healthier, and more independent lives; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Terriyln Rivers-Cannon actively aids individuals and families across our nation by offering her leadership and service in the field of social work by providing the necessary skill set to individuals who work in the areas of government, academia, corporate, and military service; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Representative of the Forth District of Georgia has set aside this day to honor and recognize Dr. Terriyln Rivers-Cannon on her achievement and to wish her well in all her endavours;

On August 1, 2019, Senator Tonya Anderson of Georgia District 43 signed a resolution in congress recognizing Dr. Terriyln Rivers-Cannon for her accomplishments. The resolution follows:

Congratulating and commending Dr. Terrilyn C. Rivers-Cannon on receiving the 2019 National School Social Worker of the Year Award; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Dr. Terrilyn C. Rivers-Cannon is one who motivates, empowers, and inspires all those who come in contact with her on a local, state, and national level; and
WHEREAS, Terrilyn is the first school social worker from Georgia to win the National School Social Worker of the Year award, along with being the first African American recipient of the award; and
WHEREAS, Terrilyn served as the 67th president of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia and was the second person to have served from within the Atlanta City School System, as well as the second to have served two terms as the organization’s state president; and
WHEREAS, she has devoted the last 18 years to improving the lives of Georgia’s school-aged population; her role is that of a child advocate, providing appropriate interventions and services that help hundreds of children and their families each year who are at risk for educational failure; and
WHEREAS, Terriyln is a Certified School Social Worker, a facilitator with the Council on Alcohol and Drugs for both the STOP and SUPER Stop programs (alcohol and drug prevention programs), and is a Question Persuade Refer (QPR) suicide prevention gatekeeper/instructor for Suicide Prevention; and
WHEREAS, Terriyln is a facilitator and trainer for Darkness to Light Sexual Abuse Prevention from Stewards of Children and is certified in mental health first aid; and
WHEREAS, she is the wife of a retired United States Army veteran and the proud mother of two sons; and
WHEREAS, Terriyln’s significant organizational and leadership talents, remarkable patience and diplomacy, keen sense of vision, and sensitivity to the needs of citizens of this state have earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Dr. Terriyln C. Rivers-Cannon is congratulated for receiving the 2019 National School Social Worker of the Year Award; commended for her efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated work in serving children and their families in the Atlanta Public School System and the State of Georgia; and extended the most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.
